Paws Up for DBOH

contributed by: Tina Valant-Siebelts, Board Member

Dog Beach of Hollywood continues to draw visitors to enjoy Hollywood's sparkling paw-printed amenity. As a community partner, we are committed to improving the beach for everyone; spanning year round residents, out of state visitors and canine companions. Since there is strength in numbers, we joined forces with The North Beach Association, The Hollywood Lakes Section Civic Association, Team Hollywood Lakes and the police department. We are distributing palm cards advising people to increase their safety and enjoyment of DBOH! Here are some highlights:

 Litter, NOT!

Careless littering and crime lead to negative impact on our town and reflects upon us all – not just dog beach guests.

There seems to be an increase in trash, not only at Pershing and Custer Streets, but North Beach, in general. To remedy this situation, DBOH funded, donated, and installed additional trash cans. Regular day-long beach clean ups are held.  Volunteers enjoy socializing over refreshments after each shifts. Ten blocks are brought to pristine condition. “Our heartfelt thanks to all those active in helping us with clean up and crime prevention campaigns; especially Terry Cantrell, Howard Schoem and Brian Daigle”, states Helena Rozo-Drori, DBOH president.

Don't be a victim

This occurs at dog parks and beaches, every where. Criminals bank on you caring for/being distracted by your dog. Blame it on the economy or simply: wrong place, wrong time. There has been a wave of auto vandalism in the parking lots, at Hollywood and the surrounding beaches.

Never leave valuables (ie: laptops, GPS, backpacks, Ipods, handbags, wallets) in your vehicle. If you must bring them, hide them out of sight PRIOR to reaching your destination. Opportunistic thieves watch for those moving items to their trunk and break into your vehicle, the moment you're out of sight/attending to your dog.   To report suspicious activity, call  954  967  HELP  (4357)

Ready, Set, Go!

DBOH’s summer (daylight savings time) hours are 5 pm – 9 pm

Fridays ~ Sundays. The dog friendly beach is located between Pershing and Custer Streets (north of Sheridan Street, off AIA). Currently, the entrance is at Pershing Street, however, this may change to accommodate sea turtle nests. DBOH’s daily fee for (for one or two dogs) is $10 / nonresidents; and $5 / Hollywood residents (must show proof – driver’s license).

For your dog’s beach day enjoyment; make sure your dog has a buckle collar with ID and proof of rabies vax. They must come when called, and not stray past the boundaries. Bring water, bowl, towels; a cooler and chair for yourself. Use sunscreen and also apply some on your dog (pay attention to inside of ears and bridge of nose).

Keep your dog on a standard six foot lead (NOT a retractable or flexilead), until you have checked in with the ranger, on the beach. Then, unclip your dog’s lead. Stay away from the dunes and avoid turtle nests. Avoid feeding/treating your dog at the beach, as it can cause fights. When it is time to leave, clip his collar to the lead, rinse dog with fresh water, and proceed back to your vehicle (on leash).

Cocoa Mulch Contains an Ingredient Harmful to Pets-Truth!
There are several versions of this eRumor but all of them say that commonly sold cocoa mulch contains theobromine which can be lethal to cats and dogs.  One version tells the story of a pet owner who lost a dog because of cocoa mulch.
